I had known Jimmy Limo since my wife and I met him at the Nevada Palace in March of 2006. He was playing the instrumental song "Apache" and I thought it was music piped in on the PA system until I saw this affable, smiling guy sitting on a stool near the entrance to the Boulder Cafe Restaurant, playing a strat guitar that was the real source of all this wonderful sound.

Jimmy would later talk to me during breaks about our mutual love of classic rock music, and he demonstrated a near encyclopedic knowledge of the subject. This would often be the only topic of our conversation, until I proposed that I help him set up a fan page on what used to be the number one social networking site - MySpace ! Later I would help him restore an old website to which he had lost the rights to the domain name, and to which we eventually re-hosted as jimmylimo.com. I urged Jimmy to find somebody "professional" to create a new web site for him, but Jimmy would not wait, and so he created his own, jimmylimo.net!! Jimmy also produced his own remarkable promotional videos which can be viewed on his YouTube channel.

The ability for anybody to even approach the herculean task of being a successful one-man musical show in Las Vegas is an amazing feat, and redundantly, by no means a small undertaking, in my opinion. Jimmy, my wife and I and all your fans will miss you, and we hope that you can continue to keep in touch with your fans through the remarkable Al Gore invention :) known as the Internet. And maybe return one day for another extended Vegas engagement ( but my feeling is that your next move, if any, would probably be back to Hawaii ! ).

"I've had this harmonizer now for 2 years... can't imagine playing without it. I play in Las Vegas as a 1-man-band. I've been playing here since 1999, and have played over 3,000 gigs (no sh-t, three THOUSAND !). Although it's designed to plug your guitar into, so it can "read" the chords to harmonize your vocals, I plug my laptop into it, which is playing my backup tracks. Amazingly, it's able to "read" the chord changes, even though there's bass, drums and 2 keyboard tracks playing. Escape To The New And The Old Vegas, The Glitz and The Glittter

(Editor's note and apology: Somebody read this post and pointed out all the negative connotations and qualities of the words "glitter" and "glitz". By way of explanation I am referring ( probably poorly and at risk of coining new meanings ), to only the positive qualities of these two words. I took the liberty to use "glitz" to mean sumptuous; that is, something inherently wealthy or expensive, and "glitter" to mean "gorgeous but superficially glamorous" After all, the area around Fremont Street is still called "glitter gulch" and in my mind this is still an apt description ...)

This weekend was a kind of escape into tourism ( versus localism ? ) for me, maybe because business is slow, the world is catching its collective breathe waiting to see what changes are in store economically ( and politically ), and Vegas went from Summer to Winter, or at least warm to cold in what seems to this local like a very short time. Every year the fact that the high desert of Mojave seemingly has no transition season between Summer and Winter always surprises and amazes me, and when the market took a dive lately, I'm not sure many of us were prepared for that transition either. Let's just say my 401K is now more like a 201K!

So as a master of escapism ( Houdini like ), my first destination ( the glitzy one ) yesterday was the Casino Monte Lago at Lake Las Vegas Resort in Henderson. I had a mailed postcard for a "free" gift: a leather duffel bag that looked like just the ticket to pack some personal effects and go on a not so well deserved trip away from Vegas. So, since Casino Monte Lago is know for its high end gifts to loyal patrons ( in addition to mugs and tee shirts ) --- I felt obligated to "pay them back" for their generosity, which I did handsomely on one of their new penny slot games that I am not familiar with that replaced the old "Twilight Zone" and "Nickel Wheel Of Fortune" machines. I wrongly assumed that a new game would pay more at the beginning to attract new players, but I was sadly mistaken.

Anyway, after picking up my "consolation" gift and a coupon for a free meal celebrating Oktoberfest at their new Portofino events room, I felt a little better. The events room is mentioned in their latest monthly Monte Lago Village Resort newsletter:

I left the "glitz" of Casino Monte Lago with an idea that I would go back to my old haunting grounds in downtown Vegas ( the "glitter" part of my great escape ) as soon as possible. So today I wandered downtown to the Plaza Hotel and Casino at One Main Street and what a contrast! I decided to play craps at a 3 dollar minimum table, and mind you I have not played at a table game in over 5 years! But once learned, craps is like riding a bicycle, in that you never forget how to play, although there is no guarantee you won't still fall off your bike. Playing and winning are two different things, however, and I lost most of my small stake after an hour of play and knew it was time to quit when the box man raised the minimum bet to five dollars. Luckily, a short play at the 25 cent wheel of fortune and I won my most of my money back. I vowed that I would stick to the slots for a while.

And while in the Plaza Hotel and Casino, I noticed that there was what looked like a really fun old fashioned dinner show called "The Rat Pack Is Back!" which I made a mental note to attend in the near future.

'The Plaza Hotel & Casino is bringing back the roots of Las Vegas entertainment, classic Vegas-style dinner shows with huge success. The Rat Pack is Back! is an eccentric must see show, featuring the best Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin and Comedian Joey Bishop impersonators around recreating a nostalgic return to the Sand’s Copa Room. After visiting the Plaza, I wondered back to Henderson via the long "scenic" route on East Freemont ( always an exciting experience ) to Boulder Highway. I stopped by the Eastside Cannery to see Jimmy Limo play his guitar at the newest property on the Boulder Strip. Mind you I had not actually caught Jimmy playing at his new venue since the Eastside Cannery opened in late August. I requested or asked politely ( Jimmy always takes requests ! ) for Jimmy to play "Secret Agent Man" and it sounded oh so good. Then he played Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door" which sounded even better with his new vocal harmonizer gizmo that adds two and three part harmony to his vocals in real time. And then he indulged me by playing his original composition called "Sunset Ridge" which he almost forgot he had written ( just joking, Jimmy! ). Jimmy performs at the Pin Ups Lounge every day except Tuesday ( Monday, Wednesday - Sunday 4:30pm - 7:30pm ) . Jimmy is such a class act that he exhibits both sides of Vegas, the glitter and the glitz! His music is a perfect complement to the Eastside Cannery's 50's and 60's theme. Anyway, stop by the Pin Ups Lounge some evening and relax at the bar or at your favorite casino slot game, and tell Jimmy "Mercurial Mike sent me" ! He will probably reply: "Who?"

Live From Las Vegas, It's Jimmy Limo !

Jimmy Limo must be the hardest working one man live musical lounge act in Las Vegas --- anybody can easily realize the truth of that statement from the first time they see and hear him perform. ( Although Jimmy confides in me that he never really tires of doing what he loves to do. ) Jimmy plays guitar. Jimmy sings. The people listen and like what they hear. They turn away from the overwhelming distractions of the casino or their hectic lives to really listen to Jimmy sing and play. To paraphrase Joni Mitchell, Jimmy plays "real good for free".

If you live in the Las Vegas metropolitan area, or you are a tourist staying on the Strip or Downtown, chances are that you are very near a Jimmy Limo venue. Jimmy performs at casinos, nightclubs, and restaurants, and also the occasional private party. Check out his schedule ( below ) and just go there and just say hello to Jimmy; Jimmy is very accessible, and he takes requests: he has a play list of several hundred songs, so chances are your favorite song is amongst them. And Jimmy will also play his own original compositions, so if you are at a loss for words or very shy, just say the secret word "Na Pali".

I have known Jimmy for as many months as there are days in the month ( over 2 1/2 years now ); and although I might be somewhat biased, I invite you to listen to him and come to your own conclusions. I have known him as a dedicated artist who loves his music and who puts so much sincere effort into pleasing the crowd.

I love Jimmy's surf music the most. But Jimmy likes his blues guitar the most. His hero is Stevie Ray Vaughan. But he also likes the slower ballads of his other greatest influence, Jimi Hendrix. As it turns out, Jimmy has many musical influences, because Jimmy loves music and it shows. During a set, Jimmy easily transitions from the blues, to classic rock, to smooth jazz and ( he jokes ), if forced to, he will also play country! But what Jimmy really likes the most are the pure tones coming from his Fender Stratocaster guitar.

Last Day at the Palace

Sorry, I could not wait for the smoke to clear. Monday will be the day they bulldoze the Nevada Palace to the ground and make a parking lot for the new Eastside Cannery. No implosion, no ceremony, just kicking in the walls. I hope that the pictures provided by the Las Vegas Sun below will serve as a memory of the old Vegas without "ticket-in ticket out" - the reason why they handed out those "moist towelettes" will soon be lost to antiquity. But the wheels of progress must turn, nothing good lasts forever.

I will miss the Boulder Cafe with its $4.99 Chicken Breast A La Parmigiana and my favorite waitress Dee ( maybe now, looking at the prices in the other casinos, I can start my weight loss program in earnest. ) I will also miss the Nevada Palace's generous comp policy and my wife's uncanny ability to get reverse royals.

But most of all, I will miss Jimmy Limo's soft & smooth guitar playing in the background. I think Jimmy will land on his feet somewhere ( hopefully, at the Eastside Cannery ). Apparently, the management has received hundreds of postcards and phone calls from fans demanding that Jimmy's musical talent be retained at the Eastside Cannery.

This video was recorded by local musician and guitarist Jimmy Limo last August 27th. Las Vegas had a free light show to accent the 2007 monsoon season. I kept waiting for the top of the Stratosphere to be hit.
