The Future Of WHV

I promised in a previous blog that I would do some soul searching on the future of this blog and report back before the end of January.

Since 1)the blog is still generating a small monthly income from ads, and I am accepting payments for links, and 2) I can't restrain my compulsion to write about Vegas topics ( for you astrology aficionados, I was born in the sign of Leo with Gemini rising ), I will continue to contribute to this blog, but most likely, not at the rate I previously posted. Hopefully, the quality of my posts will increase as the frequency of posting decreases!

To start, I will probably post once a week and gradually increase the frequency.
( Please subscribe to the blog so that I may keep track of readership - it would be greatly appreciated -- see the sidebar. ) Looking at the vast constellation of Vegas blogs and other Vegas related sites, I don't think as only one person I could ever hope to compete with the established information and events oriented blogs, but I will link to and recommend the best of them. An exception would be on the rare occasion that I attend an event ( concert, show, convention, etc. ) personally and so I would be in a position to provide a first hand report. I will continue to promote musicians and other Vegas entertainers that I like, because the compulsion to promote is also part of my "birthright". Hopefully, as my financial ability and health improve, this will happen more often.

The emphasis or niche for this blog will continue to be my personal experiences living in this rapidly changing place called Vegas -- a place unlike any other place on the earth. I hope to cover the cultural and "sociological" changes I am noticing which seem to accelerate daily. I intend to make the blog more personal and original, and I will sprinkle much of my writing with the same bad attempts at humor as I always have done ( sorry!). I hope I can get more guest authors to cover the Vegas events much better than I can.

I want to thank everybody who has written to me encouraging me to keep WHV alive. Maybe in some small way keeping this blog alive will also help keep me alive and kicking to see Vegas enter the roaring twenty twenties and beyond!!

WHV Is Going On Hiatus

The staff and management of WHV ---- well, that is really only one person, me ---- has decided to suspend this blog until further notice.

This might be no news, bad news, or good news depending on your point of view.

I would really like to report that I am going away on a long vacation ---- when in fact I am still "stuck" here in Vegas.

I am happy to report that my health is stable and I am not suspending future contributions to this blog for any health reasons, real or imagined.

I would like to think that I am working on a new web site which would take all my efforts for the near future, but that is still a pipe dream --- I have had too many false starts to believe that I am really making good progress in this area.

To anyone who might read this blog on a regular basis ( all three of you ! ) I will post here in January about the final future of WHV and whether is will be replaced with something newer and wonderfuller.

It has been a long run, and I am just resting here on the goal line. ( Incidentally, I just celebrated my thirtieth wedding anniversary yesterday and that has been a good long run also !! )

So, my fair readers ( all three of you ), please be advised that I love you all and if you have never been to Vegas, shame on you! Come soon, and bring plenty of spending money, and bet on number eight.

Adieu,

Mercurial Mike

Happy Humble First Anniversary, WHV!

Free Birthday Note Generator

What's Happening Vegas is a very humble blog with very humble beginnings. I started it approximately a year ago with the un-lofty idea to use writing as a therapy --- a so called "creative outlet" --- to divert my attention from my then constant clinical depression, and also to pay for my cable modem bill. On both of these non altruistic counts, I have succeeded. But overall, WHV is probably a failure, in that I believe it is really impossible to convey what it is like for the average ( read: not too rich or poor ) local bloke to live in ( or near ) this great city of Las Vegas. To gain any insight into Vegas life, you would really have to move here and live here for awhile and come to your own conclusions --- being an occasional tourist is really not enough. Other blogs written by locals probably do a much better job conveying what life is like here in Vegas. In any case, Vegas is changing so quickly, for better or worse, that it is really hard to categorize anything about it.

So averaging one blog post per weekday ( but not uniformly ) with wildly varying quality and various levels of plagiarism, I look back and say it was maybe a good start at best. I have ideas to make this into a really great blog ( you know: PageRank 8 and 10,000 hits a day!). Unfortunately, my current health condition can not support the same efforts in the future, for what they are worth, and so I am inviting anybody who genuinely loves Las Vegas and can write decently about "All Things Vegas" to write to me about guest blogging or co-authoring this humble blog. My e-mail is embedded in my profile. You don't even have to live here to contribute!

There are many intangible social benefits to blogging. I would like to thank the several blogging friends I have made over the last year, some of whom are linked to in my side panel. These cyber-friendships have also helped to keep my sanity at times. Some day I would like to actually meet these wonderful people.

Lastly, but not leastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Christine ( Xtine ) from Global Peace GrooVes for her exceptionally useful contributions and excellent insights that may have kept this blog boat floating whilst I was bailing out the water and desperately trying to repair the leaks.

Advertising Support For WHV

I usually try to keep such issues off the blog entries. Nobody really cares about this stuff.

But, I just had to ask if anybody knows why yesterday all my Google AdSense ads went from contextual to Public Service Announcement (PSA) non-paid ads? And, at the same time all my Auction Ads are no longer contextual. They are supposed to be "Vegas" items only.

I always wonder if Google will find some reason to drop me and not notify me like so many other sites report.

I will give Auction Ads a week to come back to selling "Vegas" related items before I remove their ads completely.

I don't make much on the ads, just enough to pay for my monthly cable modem charges, which keeps my blogging "free" ( plus a small profit ). I don't consider WHV to be a "commercial" site, and would not hesitate to ditch the ads if they were no longer relevant.

If any of you computer blogging experts out there have some advice on so called "site monitization" please feel free to comment!
