Confessions Of A Las Vegas Street Mall Walker

I am under "doctor's orders" to exercise, recovering from a Congestive Heart Failure incident last February that hospitalized me for over a week. For somebody in my condition, this usually means something like low impact walking. The doc also said that I should not exercise outdoors when the temperature is over 80 degrees. The "cooler" days are rare to non-existent during the summer in Las Vegas. Since I don't own a treadmill, there really aren't too many options available other than Mall Walking.

Walking almost every day in the local mall, one can't help but make some observations:

  • Mostly everybody seems to be unhappy. Nobody is genuinely smiling. The mall workers seem unhappy, but wear fake smiles. The customers seem to be in some kind of hypnotic trance. I think they are thinking a lot about what they want and what they don't have: thoughts which would depress me if I held on to them for too long. The only ones who return my smiles are the babies and the very young children!

  • There are lots of mirrors in the stores for people to look at themselves, but like the casinos, there are no clocks anywhere, except perhaps at the watch repair shop. Mirrors are great for vanity and seeing how items bought look on you, but they are not flattering for people like me that are there for only one reason - to lose some weight by exercising!

  • Most people shopping in the mall appear to be in good shape. The second class citizens of the mall are the non-buyers: walkers like me who need exercise, and also the many disabled and handicapped seniors who sit wherever they can and are there just to people-watch and pass the time away. I keep thinking that the mall security may be tracking me and if I don't make a purchase in the next 15 minutes they will politely escort me to the exit. The people actually shopping are typically very slender and well dressed. They like to be seen. They can afford to buy there. They do not see me. In fact, they stare right through me.

The stores that seem to be doing the best ( where there are the most people ) are the food courts, the book stores, electronics stores, and the athletic shoe stores, which are mostly visited by the urban hipsters and gangsta wannabees. The upscale clothing specialty stores ( with maybe the exception of Victoria's Secret? ) seem strangely empty every time I walk past them. The younger crowd seems to be there mostly to socialize. It is also strange that not many people are carrying shopping bags; I wonder if they deposit their purchased items into their car immediately after buying them, rather than lugging them around. Or could it be that there are many more window shoppers than buyers? Have I discovered a new kind of economic predictor?

Amazing Johnathan faces heart transplant

Still recovering from my own heart problems, I hope the best for one of my favorite Las Vegas magicians.

From Norm Clarke's Las Vegas Review Journal Aricle:

'Sahara headliner Amazing Johnathan said doctors have informed him he faces a heart transplant if the latest treatments fail.

The comic magician said he has been taking blood thinners and will have a defibrillator placed in his heart next week.

"The heart is damaged and not going to get any better," he told Vegas Confidential.

He said a virus has been destroying his heart since childhood. "And they said I'll probably need a transplant."

He was shocked, he said, to learn his doctors are convinced he's already had a heart attack.

"If I lose the weight and keep my blood thin, I should be all right," he said. "They are seeing what they can do without doing the transplant."

He indicated he had no plans to end his show, although he had suggested recently he was considering retirement.'

MIke Visits The Internist

The "Quandary" Puzzle

Mike's hospital bill raises his Adrenalin levels

Just before I went to my new Internist Doctor appointment yesterday, I walked (as encouraged by by Cardiologist Doctor) to my mailbox to pick up the mail. I found an initial bill for hospital services for one week's stay at St. Rose Sienna. It was well over sixty five thousand dollars.

Needless to say, my BP (blood pressure) was slightly elevated when I arrived at the Internist's appointment.

Modern medicine can miraculously save your life (it did!). Modern hospital billing may also kill you (it might!).

I can't sleep. I've lost my appetite. This will probably help with the weight loss program my Internist recommended.

A Post Script:

This will hopefully be my last post on my medical emergency episode, I don't want to bore people to their own possibly early deaths! One of my brothers from Back East talked to me in the hospital via cell phone with a somewhat misplaced concern, when I was, unkown to me, perhaps 20 minutes away from cardiac arrest (according to the cardiologist's reporting the next day). He said "Wasn't this inevitable?", a proposition I did not care to pursue at the time, but I'm guessing that he was referring to my recent weight gain. In the aftermath, I believe that he was just lost for words and he was just expressing his concern in his own way. I also have a hard time visiting seriously ill people in the hospital and sticking to small talk. I still love him (both my brothers). I was thinking what a great epitaph "Wasn't This Inevitable?" would be on my gravestone. It rings of the same truth that Jim Morrison expressed when he said "Nobody gets out of here alive!" Sure beats RIP!

Henderson , Nevada Ranks In Top Twenty Of USA Places To Walk

Click above for larger image
My 1.5 mile walking path around the bottom links of golf course next to my home in Henderson, Nevada

Good news for my Doctor - ordered exercise program:

According to the latest American Pediatric Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) survey, Henderson, Nevada, was on the 2006 list of best places to live. Henderson ranked highest in people walking for exercise and participating in exercise. ( My theory: it's all those transplanted Californians! )

This is very god news for me. So I'm in the right place at the right time, right? Just have to (excuse me, Nancy Sinatra!) "start walkin'" :)

Addendum:

Inspirational ( for me ) quote from Las Vegas radio personality Delilah (Sunny 106.5 FM) in her 'Dear D' section of her website.

"... Walk. I lost 47 pounds three years ago by walking daily and restricting my carbs. I walked a half mile, then a mile, then three and finally worked up to five. I still love to walk and it keeps my heart strong. Walk and pray and cry. May God cover you with His love and His mercy now and always..."

Mike Visits The Cardiologist

At the risk of losing all my regular readers (all three of them) who expect to read about Vegas Happenings, I will quickly relate the news of my current heart condition ( HIPPA be damned!)

The following is my best summary in layman's terms, as accurately as possible without medical jargon.

The doc said that I need to lose weight (already knew that) and adjusted my meds slightly to reduce my clotting factor a la VP Cheney recently. One of the risks of an irregular heart beat is developing clots, so blood thinners are administered first through injections and then orally. The doc said that I was lucky that my arteries are all clear as a result of an Angiogram he performed two weeks ago. He seems to be most interested in increasing my dosage of Coreg (to strengthen the heart muscle action ) over time to some high level gradually (bad side effect of Coreg can be dizziness). He was happy with how I was responding to the BP medications. Once a certain amount of time ( several months ) goes by, and I lose the weight, he said it might be possible to zap my heart with electricity (CLEAR!!!!) to restore my heart rhythms to normal.

I forgot to mention that I hugged the doc ( almost never do I express affection in this manner ) for saving my life!

That's all, folks!!

Walking Las Vegas

I see my cardiologist on Tuesday for a re-evaluation. Part of my road to recovery from my recent sick ticker episode will most undoubtedly be some low impact exercises. Before my heart failure incident, I did some walking, but obviously not as often as I should have!

  • My favorite place of all time to walk in the Vegas area is around the pond at Sunset Park. Features people and duck watching!

  • My second favorite place to walk is the indoor "track" at the Desert Passage behind the Aladdin (now called Planet Hollywood, I can't keep up with all these corporation changes - others are better than me at this). I had posted about the Desert Passage several months ago.

  • About.com offers several walking tour options on walking the Las Vegas strip, which I have not formally pursued yet. See also their "The Long Walk Down The Las Vegas Strip" article. Check out their other helpful articles on using a walking program to keep in shape.

  • Ironically, I signed up for the "Walking Around Nevada" program before my heart failure episode, but I did not contribute one step to fulfilling my personal daily walking goal. The spirit is more willing now, even if the flesh may be even more weak at this moment.

My cardiologist has not approved hiking Mount Charleston yet, but when he does I will know I am back to full recovery!

Relax, Mike Max! Your Heart Is Jumping

As I posted in this blog few days ago, I almost died of congestive heart failure in a Henderson, Nevada hospital about two weeks ago. Once I was hooked up to the proper IV drips to control my irregular heart beat, and lower my rapid heart rate and high BP, I started to listen or more accurately use FOX cable news as a background noise from the hospital room TV as I drifted in and out of consciousness.

A very funny thing happened. I was in a very depressed state and began to pray and accept the possibility that I might not live through this ordeal. I could tell something was very wrong by the way the hospital staff was looking at me. So in my semi-sleep state, listening to endless, endless talk about Anna Nicole Smith from the TV , a commercial kept coming on periodically for Doubletree Inns with a song sung by some angelic voice ( now I know that voice to be the talented Dinah Washington ) singing "Relax Max" My name is Mike, not Max, but I felt the angel was singing directly to me:

Relax, Max, your nerves are just like jumpin' jax, Max.

Your heart is thumpin' with a crazy sound,

Hear it pound,

Bumpin', bumpin', bumpin', jumpin' up and down.

Stay cool fool,
Just take it easy, that's the rule fool ...

I actually started to laugh and the angelic voice made me feel that everything would be alright!

Here is the song "Relax Max" sung by Swingin' Miss 'D' ( from Amazon.com ).

Music has such healing powers!

About the song:

The song is called Relax Max by the Great Dinah Washington With Quincy Jones And His Orchestra recorded in 1956 for Mercury Records.

The song can be found on the album Swingin' Miss 'D' on Polygram Records. It can also be found on The Complete Dinah Washington (1956-1958) which is a box set on Polygram Records

WHV? Blogger Almost Predicts His Own Demise

Frankly, I never really get too personal in this blog, revealing very little about my personal life. I have been known to be too frivolous and substituting humor ( or some would say, lack thereof ) for substance.

My last blog entry joked about Vegas' being chosen as the most unhealthy ( fattest ) city. It turns out the joke is on me. I spent the last week in a hospital ( a very good hospital in Henderson where every room is private and the food is actually good! ) being treated for an apparent heart failure. I am recovering well at home and now must ponder my mortality more than I ever wanted to. My prognosis is apparently good.

The only message I have for anybody who happens to read this is that when you have a symptom like shortness of breath for three weeks - don't self diagnose! Remember what happened to Jim Henson ( not that I can ever compare myself to him )when he refused to acknowledge his pneumonia and died of blood sepsis. See a doctor as soon as possible and get checked out! I came very close to departing this fair planet.

I will most definitely survive this "wake up call", and will continue to report on the best buffets, but will honestly not be visiting too many of them for a while.

Please don't let your weight go like I did. I am going to have to loose a lot of weight and exercise to return to normal, and I will keep my readers updated on my progress. Life is good in Vegas, but you need to maintain your health to enjoy it.

Thanks for every one's kind wishes for a speedy recovery. By the way, the hospital that saved my life is Saint Rose Sienna in Henderson, and they have a very excellent professional staff. So anybody visiting Vegas who is unfortunate enough to suffer a medical emergency - this is the number one hospital I would recommend to be taken to. (final preposition noted) More later, I have some meds to take. :)
