Confessions Of A Las Vegas Street Mall Walker

I am under "doctor's orders" to exercise, recovering from a Congestive Heart Failure incident last February that hospitalized me for over a week. For somebody in my condition, this usually means something like low impact walking. The doc also said that I should not exercise outdoors when the temperature is over 80 degrees. The "cooler" days are rare to non-existent during the summer in Las Vegas. Since I don't own a treadmill, there really aren't too many options available other than Mall Walking.

Walking almost every day in the local mall, one can't help but make some observations:

  • Mostly everybody seems to be unhappy. Nobody is genuinely smiling. The mall workers seem unhappy, but wear fake smiles. The customers seem to be in some kind of hypnotic trance. I think they are thinking a lot about what they want and what they don't have: thoughts which would depress me if I held on to them for too long. The only ones who return my smiles are the babies and the very young children!

  • There are lots of mirrors in the stores for people to look at themselves, but like the casinos, there are no clocks anywhere, except perhaps at the watch repair shop. Mirrors are great for vanity and seeing how items bought look on you, but they are not flattering for people like me that are there for only one reason - to lose some weight by exercising!

  • Most people shopping in the mall appear to be in good shape. The second class citizens of the mall are the non-buyers: walkers like me who need exercise, and also the many disabled and handicapped seniors who sit wherever they can and are there just to people-watch and pass the time away. I keep thinking that the mall security may be tracking me and if I don't make a purchase in the next 15 minutes they will politely escort me to the exit. The people actually shopping are typically very slender and well dressed. They like to be seen. They can afford to buy there. They do not see me. In fact, they stare right through me.

The stores that seem to be doing the best ( where there are the most people ) are the food courts, the book stores, electronics stores, and the athletic shoe stores, which are mostly visited by the urban hipsters and gangsta wannabees. The upscale clothing specialty stores ( with maybe the exception of Victoria's Secret? ) seem strangely empty every time I walk past them. The younger crowd seems to be there mostly to socialize. It is also strange that not many people are carrying shopping bags; I wonder if they deposit their purchased items into their car immediately after buying them, rather than lugging them around. Or could it be that there are many more window shoppers than buyers? Have I discovered a new kind of economic predictor?

Henderson , Nevada Ranks In Top Twenty Of USA Places To Walk

Click above for larger image
My 1.5 mile walking path around the bottom links of golf course next to my home in Henderson, Nevada

Good news for my Doctor - ordered exercise program:

According to the latest American Pediatric Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) survey, Henderson, Nevada, was on the 2006 list of best places to live. Henderson ranked highest in people walking for exercise and participating in exercise. ( My theory: it's all those transplanted Californians! )

This is very god news for me. So I'm in the right place at the right time, right? Just have to (excuse me, Nancy Sinatra!) "start walkin'" :)

Addendum:

Inspirational ( for me ) quote from Las Vegas radio personality Delilah (Sunny 106.5 FM) in her 'Dear D' section of her website.

"... Walk. I lost 47 pounds three years ago by walking daily and restricting my carbs. I walked a half mile, then a mile, then three and finally worked up to five. I still love to walk and it keeps my heart strong. Walk and pray and cry. May God cover you with His love and His mercy now and always..."

Walking Las Vegas

I see my cardiologist on Tuesday for a re-evaluation. Part of my road to recovery from my recent sick ticker episode will most undoubtedly be some low impact exercises. Before my heart failure incident, I did some walking, but obviously not as often as I should have!

  • My favorite place of all time to walk in the Vegas area is around the pond at Sunset Park. Features people and duck watching!

  • My second favorite place to walk is the indoor "track" at the Desert Passage behind the Aladdin (now called Planet Hollywood, I can't keep up with all these corporation changes - others are better than me at this). I had posted about the Desert Passage several months ago.

  • About.com offers several walking tour options on walking the Las Vegas strip, which I have not formally pursued yet. See also their "The Long Walk Down The Las Vegas Strip" article. Check out their other helpful articles on using a walking program to keep in shape.

  • Ironically, I signed up for the "Walking Around Nevada" program before my heart failure episode, but I did not contribute one step to fulfilling my personal daily walking goal. The spirit is more willing now, even if the flesh may be even more weak at this moment.

My cardiologist has not approved hiking Mount Charleston yet, but when he does I will know I am back to full recovery!

Desert Passage Mall Walking Las Vegas

With a natural circular indoor track, The Desert Passage has got to be one of the best places in Las Vegas for all you mall walkers out there. Great for people- watching while you walk. They also have a free show, an indoor rainstorm! (Indoor rainstorm, complete with thunder and lightening is every half hour on the weekends, every hour during the week.)

Especially in the summer months, it is just too hot to walk outside in Vegas! One caution: if you bring your wallet you may be tempted to dump some cash in the shops (170 of them) along with the pounds you are presumably walking off. I won't even mention the great restaurants(16 of them)!! Park for free in the parking garage just to the East, and jog down (and back up) the steps instead of taking the elevator to increase your heart-rate!

The mall circles the Aladdin Theatre For The Performing Arts, where I have attended such diverse performances as the Moody Blues concerts and a personal darshan moment with my then guru Sri Darwin Gross ( he used to be the Living Master of Eckankar, was kicked out, now in Oregon with a his new group ATOM ). But I digress... Anyway, the acoustic quality of the Theatre For The Performing Arts is much greater here than most Las Vegas showrooms. More digression...

The place used to be a big wooden barn with iffy acoustics, but it's amazing what a $25 million renovation can accomplish. The new Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts, open since August of 2000, earned the title of Best Concert Hall on the Strip from a major Las Vegas newspaper. The cosmetic makeover has brought comfortable new seats that match the royal purples in the decor, wide aisles and a shortened distance between the stage and the first row. Sight lines are clear from the high-roller seats to the balconies, and both the restrooms and the lobby have been expanded. But the theatre sounds even better than it looks, a result of state-of-the-art equipment and acoustic panels in place of windows. The sound system is so advanced that Prince, who's notoriously picky for toting along his own equipment, was so impressed he left said equipment at home. -- David Hofstede, editor, AOL City Guide Las Vegas
