Art Event At Vdara, City Center Las Vegas

Art Show Poster

This was one of those nights that I feel so fortunate to be living in Las Vegas. It was a beautiful night. I was with a good friend of mine. It was the beginning of the holiday Memorial Day weekend, sort of. A Thursday night. A perfect night for an art show.

I spied an ad a week earlier in the local publication “Seven” magazine about an art show sponsored by their publication and hosted by Shag, an artist. I was intrigued, so I RSVP’d. Now I was strolling through one of the newest and most beautiful hotels on The Strip. Hotel Vdara is part of the CityCenter complex; it’s a non-gaming, non-smoking, all-suite hotel and spa. Designed by a team of architects at New York’s RV Architecture, led by Rafael Vinoly, it incorporates a crescent design and echoes circular themes presented in the ARIA Hotel and Casino, which is also part of CityCenter.

Josh Agle, better known as Shag, is an L.A.-based artist specializing in colorful, cartoonish artwork that celebrates consumerism and consumption and reminded me of ‘50’s-style ads and incorporated tiki-themed styles, among others.

The art show was held in and around Bar Vdara. I felt so chic, so sophisticated. And so underdressed. The women, especially, had come out in full force, wearing their Vegas nightlife best outfits. We were served all sorts of delicious appetizers, from sesame-encrusted shrimp, to gazpacho and ceviche. Not only was wine served, but mixed drinks as well. We sat inside and listed to a female DJ spin R&B tunes, with an accompanying conga player.

Outside on the patio, patrons relaxed on the hanging swings that were part of the Bar Vdara ambiance.

It was cool, sophisticated, and it was nice to see a hotel that was not devoted to gaming for once. I have only been to ARIA and Vdara. I still have more to see at CityCenter. With events like this, I will definitely be back.
