Blue Martini Lounge Attracts the Ladies Every Wednesday Night

by Julie Kasperson

I haven’t been to Blue Martini for a while. Since I was on vacation recently, I decided to indulge myself and attend Girls Night Out, which is held every Wednesday after 8:00 p.m. at Blue Martini Lounge, in the Town Square shopping center, near the airport. It’s described as an upscale lounge, live entertainment bar, with a tantalizing tapas menu. Girls Night Out tends to be wild and out of control, due to the fact that there are lots of pretty women, lots of gentlemen eager to meet the women, and half-price drinks for the ladies.

There is usually a mix of live music provided by a band, then a DJ spinning Top 40 pop and dance music. By the time I arrived at the lounge, the party was in full swing, with a DJ spinning the latest dance hits and all three bar areas crowded with patrons sipping on their Blue Martinis or other cocktail of choice.

I decided to try an apple martini. It was delicious. But I can only really handle two of them, because they are strong, and you get about a drink and a half, really, with the martini glass full of your drink, and a martini shaker with another half-drink inside. The signature Blue Martini is fun to drink and popular, with a glow stick stuck inside the glass. I looked around and saw women with many of these glowing tubes strung together to make necklaces or bracelets that they showed off during the night.

Another cool thing that they offer every Wednesday night is a chance to win merchandise. If you look inside any of the local weekly Las Vegas magazines, or check out the Blue Martini website, and click on Las Vegas (the lounge is nationwide), you’ll find out what is being offered on which date. It could be a designer purse, bikinis, Jimmy Choo high heels, or on the night I was there, it was Apple gear: laptops, iPads, iPods, and Apple TV. Every time a female bought a drink, she received a ticket to go into a drawing. The more drinks you have, the better your chances at winning are. Needless to say, my friend from work and I didn’t win anything, but we tried.

Girls Night Out is free for ladies; gentlemen free until 11:00 p.m. After 11:00 p.m. men pay $20 cover. Dress is mostly upscale or business casual. Many tourists go to this lounge, as well as lots of younger Vegas locals. Friendly, although extremely busy, male and female bartenders.

Star Encounters In Vegas

There is a type of random encounter that allows me occasionally, albeit rarely, to meet entertainment celebrities in Las Vegas, which is amazing considering that my current health condition does not allow me to get out and about that much.

DAMN IT! I just re-read this first sentence and you must know that it is a bit of a lie --- there really are no coincidences and the "random encounter" is really a logical result of my wife's paramedical insurance job, where she is definitely "out and about" with her job as a nurse who does mobile physicals. She occasionally meets famous people as part of her job. I tag along and act as a combination car driver, porter, and "body guard" ( LOL ).

I met Criss Angel long ago this way before I knew who he was. I was clueless. I had the nerve to ask Criss' business manager what Criss does for a living ! I met some well known casino executive who will remain anonymous, who comped me to see shows like "Hairspray". And I also missed some of the trips with my wife; for example, when my wife met Teller from "Penn and Teller" --- he talked !! --- my loss in not meeting him , since I'm such a magic / illusionist fan. She also went to the home of Suzanne Somers and met Mike Love of the Beach Boys --- again my loss...

It is somewhat hard to write about this stuff, because I don't like "bragging" and I am not really by nature a "name dropper" --- I beg your indulgence -- but if I do encounter a celebrity, say, in a restaurant, I do find it hard to leave them alone and not say "hi" or at least ask for an autograph. Many years ago my wife and I were having New Years' day dinner at The Sands Hotel ( now you know it was many, many years ago ! ) and the late Redd Foxx came over to our table and talked to ( joked with ) my wife. Probably because she was staring at him and his wife. He asked her what she did for a living and she, SOMEWHAT startled and out of character for her, meekly replied "Nurse?". He told my wife "Please stay close--- an old man with my bad health may need your services soon !! ". Funny memories. There are others, but I won't bore you anymore. I am sure that many other people have had similar encounters. The real point is that living in a place like Vegas ( or New York or LA ) makes it more possible for anybody to have these fun "chance" meetings with celebs.

Meeting George Bugatti

One such pleasant encounter recently occurred at the Casa di Amore restaurant where my wife and I shared Thanksgiving Dinner. I met the house resident lounge entertainer extraordinaire George Bugatti. George currently performs Tuesday through Saturday 6-10 PM at the Casa di Amore; he is the perfect entertainer for the "Old Vegas" ambiance of this great Italian restaurant. If you don't recognize the name, George is a "crooner" in the tradition of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. George also performs songs from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s.

George's credits in his bio are so impressive. He sat and chatted with us for a while. He suggested ( and I would like ) to visit LA sometime to review the next running of his musical play "WIZARD".

"George is currently starring in “WIZARD” The Musical Story of Oz Composer Harold Arlen which is touring Performing Arts Centers across America. His business partner Sam Arlen, the composer’s son, also stars in this Broadway-bound show"

"George Bugatti created the Three Crooners expressly for the Arlen songbook. Featuring George Bugatti, Alistair Tober and Johnny K, the Three Crooners have settled into a six week run in the Las Vegas showroom after recently completing a 20 city tour, of America's most beloved Jazz based standards.
Although many might think of the Rat Pack when they hear the word Crooner, a term first adopted for Bing Crosby and later used to describe the likes of Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, The Three Crooners have their own distinctive style, namely George Bugatti's unmistakeable masculinity and unique gift for melody and phrasing, and influences from mentors like Tony Bennett. With his relaxed style and Malibu surfer look, Johnny K, is more like the Chet Baker of the group, while Alistair is the broadway triple threat with many impressive TV and movie credits."

Going ‘Gossy’ at the Palms

The following post was contributed by WHV contributor Julie Kasperson. She can be contacted through her Facebook Site.

The Palms Hotel and Casino has yet another pleasing distraction added to its roster: Matt Goss. He opened September 4th at the Lounge at the Palms, a smaller venue holding between 100-200 people. I have always enjoyed spending time at the Palms and love the fact that it caters to both the celebrity jet-set with Moon, Rain, Ghostbar, and Playboy nightclubs, and also tempts the locals with gaming and state-of-the-art movie complex, Brenden Theatres.

The Palms has turned The Lounge into The Gossy Room, replete with cocktail waitresses dressed as either old-fashioned usherettes or stewardesses from an era gone by. As you wait for the show to begin, Sinatra croons over the PA system. Goss has called his show “just this side of civilized” and the atmosphere and music emphasize his point.

Goss and his ten piece band rock the joint in a classy, sexy fashion. He moves from Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” to the Nina Simon classic “Feeling Good” with easy grace. His own compositions are also included in the show; some are featured on his new CD “GOSSY” which was released in September 2009. He reminded me of an older, British version of Justin Timberlake: handsome, able to play a multitude of instruments like piano and guitar, with a sexy, supple singing voice comfortable belting out rockers or crooning falsetto when it’s called for.

His band was tight and moved confidently through different musical styles. During one song they changed the beat into a rap/reggae workout, and Goss threw in some Marvin Gaye “Sexual Healing” lyrics. Oh yes, and for the men there’s eye candy too: the Dirty Virgins. They are the four back-up dancers that grace the stage in eye-popping black lingerie during a good portion of Goss’s performance and venture out into the audience a few times during the show.

It’s not surprising that the Dirty Virgins are part of Goss’s show: his producer and manager is Robin Antin, creator of the Pussycat Dolls. She has succeeded in showcasing a singer/songwriter who is a virtual unknown in the U.S. Goss had success in the ‘80’s with his twin brother Luke in a pop group called Bros. Now it’s up to the Vegas scene whether this blue-eyed Brit is rewarded with a long run here or not.

Downside: it was difficult to understand Goss’s banter at times because of his British accent. Also, the mix in the room needs to be adjusted so that more of Goss’s stellar vocals shine through instead of mostly his band. He has a powerful voice and it needs to be heard. Congratulations to the Palms for creating a residency for this very talented Englishman.

Pahrump Nevada And All That Jazz

Tom Saitta on trumpet - photo credit: MARK WAITE / PVT / Pahrump Valley Times

Last night my wife and I had dinner at the Nuggget Hotel Casino in Pahrump, Nevada, about 65 miles from our home in Henderson. We travel to Pahrump several times a month on business: my wife does paramedical physical examinations for insurance companies and Pahrump is part of her territory. The Nugget is usually where we wind down before the trip back "over the hump".

At 6:00 PM I stopped chomping on my taco salad to hear what sounded like Frank Sinatra singing from their Stage Bar lounge. It turned out to be Tom Saitta singing with keyboard and sax accompaniment. The sax player was the octogenerian Autie Goodman formerly of The Four Freshmen. Tom also demonstrated that he is an accomplished trumpet player ( see photo above). We left the restaurant and while my wife threw away some of our precious nickels, I sat with the assembling group in the lounge ( there were chairs lined in a seating area for those who did not want to sit in the lounge area and one "reserved" table ) and was thoroughly entranced by the performance. I like jazz and I like music from the 40's. Kind of reminds me of when I was 4 years old listening to the big vacuum tube radio console in our living room, but that's another story.

Tom introduced his group, which interestingly included a sound engineer who was recording the sets for a future CD, and a great keyboard artist ( including the bass and rhythm machine ) Dennis Mellen, who played with the U.S. Air Force Band for 11 years. Tom plugged the Nugget Hotel Casino as a up and coming place, where he planned to play on a regular basis with his ensemble band and guest performers. He also plugged his new project Tommasino's Fine Italian Dining restaurant, which will obviously have a restaurant ( but no cover charge, no casino gaming, and no smoking allowed ) a bar or cocktail service, and a live jazz lounge and dance area. Bringing your own food and buying some wine to go with it is not discouraged! Like the old jazz supper clubs which is before my time but sounds like a really cool idea.

As I was getting ready to leave ( I wish I could have stayed longer, but my wife was anxious to get home to process her blood samples ) I saw Heidi Harris of KDWN AM Las Vegas talk radio fame arrive, apparently a good friend of Tom's, and Tom announced that the radio personality and former lounge singer would later contribute a song or two. Darn it, I'm sorry I missed all that. But I am looking forward to returning to the Nugget and seeing how their expansion project which includes a larger casino and new movie theatres is coming along. And to visit Tom's restaurant when it is finally completed. Geepers, Pahrump may become a tourist destination yet!

Live From Las Vegas, It's Jimmy Limo !

Jimmy Limo "Poster Art" Slideshow ( press "X'" if slideshow stops )

Jimmy Limo must be the hardest working one man live musical lounge act in Las Vegas --- anybody can easily realize the truth of that statement from the first time they see and hear him perform. ( Although Jimmy confides in me that he never really tires of doing what he loves to do. ) Jimmy plays guitar. Jimmy sings. The people listen and like what they hear. They turn away from the overwhelming distractions of the casino or their hectic lives to really listen to Jimmy sing and play. To paraphrase Joni Mitchell, Jimmy plays "real good for free".

If you live in the Las Vegas metropolitan area, or you are a tourist staying on the Strip or Downtown, chances are that you are very near a Jimmy Limo venue. Jimmy performs at casinos, nightclubs, and restaurants, and also the occasional private party. Check out his schedule ( below ) and just go there and just say hello to Jimmy; Jimmy is very accessible, and he takes requests: he has a play list of several hundred songs, so chances are your favorite song is amongst them. And Jimmy will also play his own original compositions, so if you are at a loss for words or very shy, just say the secret word "Na Pali".

I have known Jimmy for as many months as there are days in the month ( over 2 1/2 years now ); and although I might be somewhat biased, I invite you to listen to him and come to your own conclusions. I have known him as a dedicated artist who loves his music and who puts so much sincere effort into pleasing the crowd.

I love Jimmy's surf music the most. But Jimmy likes his blues guitar the most. His hero is Stevie Ray Vaughan. But he also likes the slower ballads of his other greatest influence, Jimi Hendrix. As it turns out, Jimmy has many musical influences, because Jimmy loves music and it shows. During a set, Jimmy easily transitions from the blues, to classic rock, to smooth jazz and ( he jokes ), if forced to, he will also play country! But what Jimmy really likes the most are the pure tones coming from his Fender Stratocaster guitar.

  • Jimmy Limo "returns" ( @ the same location where the Nevada Palace once stood! ) to the Pinup's Lounge @ The Eastside Cannery starting August 29 from 4:30 - 7:30PM - check his schedule ( click above ) for confirmed future dates!

Another great list from Las Vegas City Search

Playing Real Good, Sometimes For Free

What I mean to convey here, perhaps poorly, is that to listen to great music in a Las Vegas lounge, you need not necessarily be a lush or a gigolo, just a lover of good music. Vegas has grown up, and the lounge acts have gotten more and more like the stage acts you pay good money to see. In the list that follows, I've provided a mix of casino based and independent lounges and other venues around Las Vegas, including some stage show venues. As always, feel free to add, subtract, multiply, or divide this list to tickle your se gusto.

Warning: some lounges do have cover charges and dress codes, so check each individual listing.

1) Celebrity Theatre
201 N 3rd St, Las Vegas, NV 89101 · 702-384-2582

Moving the party off the Strip, Celebrity's nightly proceedings feature a varied selection of music that moves beyond the typical Vegas lounge act. Live rock and even Dixieland can be heard, and DJs take over on some nights. With a minimum age of 18, you'll find a slightly younger crowd than at most Vegas nightspots. Patrons acclaim the venue for being more spacious than many bars yet more intimate than most music halls on the Strip.

2) Empire Ballroom
3765 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109 · 702-737-7376

This elegant space accommodates 1,300 people, and its large stage typically hosts rock and metal bands, although at times, major DJ talents take over. The central floor is lined with recessed, semicircular booths, perfect for four or five friends. Large, cozy couches and a warm color scheme encourage audiophiles to mingle between sets. If more privacy is desired, head to the upper balcony or to the patio for views of the Strip. The prominently-hung signature chandelier occasionally descends in a blaze of color and light.

3) Gold Coast Lounge
4000 W Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89103 · 702-367-7111

If you need a hit of New Orleans in the middle of Las Vegas, stop by this cool lounge inside the off-Strip Gold Coast Casino. The Royal Dixie Jazz Band has called the lounge home for over 20 years, playing an upbeat selection of Southern-flavored jazz. Country and bluegrass acts take the stage from time to time, and in the wee hours, pop and Top 40 dominate. Although plenty of other action is available in the casino and movie theater, the lounge capitalizes on its solid reputation as a relaxed venue for highly enjoyable music.

4) Hollywood Theatre
3799 Las Vegas Blvd S, MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV 89109 · 877-880-0880

Legendary crooner Tom Jones only performs at the Hollywood Theatre when in Vegas. If this fact alone isn't enough to draw you in, consider the place's 740-seat size, which is much more up-close-and-personal than most of the venues at Sin City's major hotels. Even more happily, each seat has a great view of the stage. Besides the Welsh heartthrob, other musical acts appear, as well as stand-up comics and magicians (including David Copperfield).

5) Hootie and the Blowfish's Shady Grove Lounge
3333 Blue Diamond Rd, Silverton Casino and Lodge, Las Vegas, NV 89139 · 702-263-7777

Easygoing good times are what this lounge is all about. Many types of musical acts take the stage, although the tendency is towards '80s and '90s rock. If you're lucky, Hootie and the Blowfish themselves will make an appearance to sing hits like "Hold My Hand" and "I Go Blind." Aside from great music, you'll find plenty of laid-back activities, including billiards and a one-lane bowling alley in a converted Airstream trailer. Alternatively, enjoy cold beers and appetizing snacks on the shady patio.

6) House Of Blues
3950 Las Vegas Blvd S, Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, NV 89119 · 702-632-7600

For great blues, rock, and alternative acts, this venue is not to be missed. Acoustics are superb, and excellent views of the stage can be had from both the floor and the balcony, allowing performers and audience to connect. On Sundays, the popular gospel brunch provides down-home soul food and top-notch music; acts like the Blind Boys of Alabama sometimes drop by. Lots of burnished wood and carefully peeled paint allow an air of faded Southern charm to pervade this beloved institution.

7) Orleans Showroom
4500 W Tropicana Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89103 · 702-365-7111

Catering to an older crowd, Orleans Showroom hosts yesteryear's headliners, who play shows to a packed house. Crystal Gayle, Boyz II Men, Engelbert Humperdinck, Air Supply, and Debbie Reynolds are just a few of the artists who have wowed audiences in this 827-seat theater. Comics and stage shows also make appearances. Tickets are typically upwards of $50.

8) Sand Dollar Blues Lounge
3355 Spring Mountain Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89102 · 702-871-6651

Long appreciated by locals, Sand Dollar Blues is the place to be for great blues and rock – and to catch the occasional star. The decor is simple, the music stunning, and the clientele friendly and down-to-earth. According to regulars, the lounge frequently beats out mega-venues like The Joint and House of Blues as the best place to hear live music. Lack of pretension, low cover charges, and a 24-hour, never-close policy keep the atmosphere relaxed and low key.

9) The Boston Bar & Grill
1030 E Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89119 · 702-368-0750

If you need a lot of room to execute your moves on the dance floor, come to The Boston, which boasts a large, open space for doing just that. The off-Strip location and subdued exterior may fool you, but the bar and lounge pack them in for live music five nights a week – DJs can stay on the Strip. Rock and blues are the genres of choice, although punk, alternative, and soul also get some play. The menu might not live up to its "world-famous" claim, but it does feature a solid selection of pastas, sandwiches, pizzas, and appetizers.

10) The Joint
4455 Paradise Rd, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, NV 89109 · 702-693-5000

Don't let the simplicity deceive you: Inside this wooden-floored, airy space, some legendary rock n' roll has taken place. Blondie, David Bowie, and Metallica have delighted fans, along with newer acts like Jimmy Eat World and New Found Glory. Guitars arranged in sunburst patterns provide visual interest, and more rock memorabilia can be found throughout the venue and in the adjacent Hard Rock Hotel. Due to the layout and fairly laid-back vibe, it's not uncommon to rub elbows with celebs.

The Twelve Daze Of Christmas

The Twelve Daze Of Christmas..

This Parody Of "The 12 Days Of Christmas" Was The Signature Song Of Veteran Las Vegas Performer Fay McKay. It Is An Excerpt From The Feature Documentary "LOST VEGAS: The Lounge Era"

"Fay McKay is still alive and living in the desert, in obscurity. It would sure be nice for lots of people to see her do her famous comedy bit. Since it's the season, we've uploaded Fay's bit to YouTube. By the way, the actor/sleight-of-hand genius/show biz historian Ricky Jay is our film's narrator. Link"
